A multi-sensory celebration of rebirth activated by cleansing self with healing water and ancient feminine ritualistic practice. The gallery space is transformed into the metaphorical womb. My self-portrait, a video projection created from my x-rays, entitled Womb Cave sets the intention for restorative healing. This work reflects upon when self love was new to me. I have created permanent sacred space, where self care is key. I am proud of: who I am unapologetically, caring for self, loving self unconditionally, living life with passion and purpose, embracing the freedom to be me. The performance incorporates healing of past injuries, as I let go of visceral memories, while gifting others small tokens and gestures of love to cherish and reflect upon. I’ve fabricated sacred sculptural objects to engage with including: a womb shield encrusted with quartz crystals, and a headdress adorned with delicate paper flowers serving as armor for the mind. I was forced to embrace a mode of self-care after recent traumas inflicted through physical and sexual assaults to my body and after being hit by, and bouncing off of the hood of a car. Since then, self love has become my key to liberation. Like so many others, who feel displaced in an uncaring world, I now love myself, and reenter my own womb.

Take place in "The White House" 10’W X 20’L X 10’H plexi structure is the embodiment of the black mother — an under-appreciated, over-tapped, stolen natural resource used for mass production of industrialized human labor. Nicoletta’s piece highlights ideals of beauty, femininity, and the role of black women in the building of this nation through human reproduction. It is a visual conversation about the past, modern society, lost power, and disconnected motherhood unveiled in the composed installation; reconfigured in a colonized and slavery context. BirthMother nurtures her newborn, while barefoot, and tethered to the box signify the dance she must do to maintain a position not of her own making nor choosing. Wearing a long sleeved latex suit reminiscent of a hero’s garb; her female form and signs of post-birth labor are clearly evident. Upon her head, a glorious crown headpiece denoting her strength and royal heritage. Viewers experienced the intimate time that BirthMother has with her newborns, those few precious moments to love on and prepare them, before releasing into a world that does not appreciate. Images and sounds of fetal heartbeat, coos, and drums evoke the womb; a place of warmth and love.

TRACES, Ni de aquí, Ni de allá at Area 405
An intricate celebration of a Panameña set to the beat of the Congo de Colon, which runs in her veins. The performance is an exploration of space, rhythm, cultural, spirituality, and ancient healing. The forest floor is her dance floor, nature is her medicine, and Coco Solo is her heart. The sculptural objects crafted and housed in her reliquary reflect upon the culture that is forever imprinted in her skin and fused to her bones. Panamanian Artista (Artist), Nicoletta Daríta de la Brown, draws from her experience growing up as a Negrita (Black Latina) often feeling misplaced and disconnected from her source. Her identity birthed in the pieces of Panama that her Mamá (Mother) and Abuelita (Grandmother) brought with them as immigrants to the United States.

Traditional interpretation has led to the belief that one must play it safe in life, obey all authority without question, not to fly too high. Modern reinterpretations points to the other part of the myth’s warning: Don’t fly too low either.
We all need to spread our wings and soar, embrace talent, pursue passions, find purpose in life. Aiming for the stars and walking with head held high is a good thing. Push against the walls that confine, and make self-love a priority while helping others.

Reclaiming space for the Shamanic Archetypes through representation of anatomy of the calling. Healers are the bridges between nature and beings; serving as translators between the mountains, oceans, rivers, animals, and humans. Multidimensional beings who dance between seen and unseen realms.

Wearable Sculptural Objects from Womb Rebirth endurance performance on exhibition at Baltimore School for the Arts
Examining the key to intimacy, the balance between vulnerability and healthy boundaries, using fabricated sacred objects as garment. These wearable works are slowly shed during the 3-hour endurance performance from the Rebirth Series, allowing deeper connection and unrestricted fluidity in movement. The objects are then reaffixed upon the performative vessel signifying a “pregnant pause” to create space for restorative self love.
